Introduction to my Artifacts for Online Course Design

The artifacts presented in this section of my portfolio represent the foundation for an online learning course in the "Fundamentals of Crisis Negotiation" that I created as part of the “E-Learning and Online Teaching” Graduate Certificate Program from the University of Wisconsin.(1
In an online educational environment, it is imperative that all learning activities be designed with careful attention given to the selection of formative assessment methods that facilitate student learning and promote higher-order thinking.” ~Danny Durham
I originally developed the content of this course for classes that I taught to members of public law enforcement and nuclear security crisis negotiation teams in the traditional classroom setting. To address student learning needs in the online environment, I have redesigned the face-to-face instructional methods to address considerations for:
  • Student-centered interactive learning methods
  • Diversity and special needs of students
  • Learning communities that encourage student engagement
  • Learning outcomes focused on using technological tools for formative assessment
  • Activities that allow students to receive constructive feedback as learning is occurring

In an online educational environment, it is imperative that all learning activities be designed with careful attention given to the selection of formative assessment methods that facilitate student learning and promote higher-order thinking. This focus on formative assessment of student learning mandates that educational materials cannot be delivered through an online environment in the same manner as the traditional classroom setting. Accordingly, I have selected formative assessment activities for my online “Fundamentals of Crisis Negotiation” course that incorporates the use of information technology to enhance critical thinking skills by students, and to focus on the manner that individuals use technology to acquire knowledge and interact in today’s information society.
I appreciate your review of my online course artifacts and consideration for opportunities in the design and facilitation of online learning activities as well as instruction in the traditional classroom setting. I look forward to hearing from you and can be reached by email at dcdurham@me.com.
